Mystic wolf express6/2/2023 ![]() She's an unreliable narrator because she's so focused on Mason and she, presumably, knows all the things that the reader doesn't, so she doesn't feel the need to think about them, leaving us in the dark. However, the reader is never told how these werewolves came into being, how they evolved into what they are.įourthly, it was in first person and Darcy is, um, how to put this, not exactly what I'd call alpha material. Darcy and Mason also reference dreams that foreshadow finding their mates. ![]() So why aren't they allowed to change? There also seemed to be some kind of psychic component to this werewolf breed as Darcy tries repeatedly to connect properly with Mason. In addition, Boring allows her characters to utilize some wolf behaviors while still in human form, implying the human and wolf are meshed together. During the first violent scene, Darcy makes reference to the idea that they are taught not to change, as if the wolf will take over, but no reason or explanation is given as to why. Thirdly, it was hard to get a grasp on the culture of this particular breed of werewolves. He eventually breaks down a little, but it didn't ring true to me. Mason, who should be more devastated than anyone, seems particularly unmoved by the murder of a loved one. However, rather than mourning or dealing with the fallout, they go romping in the woods. Secondly, a supporting character is killed and someone who is very important to both Mason & Darcy. Boring later inserts a flashback showing us how they got together, but, at that point, it's anti-climatic. Darcy and Mason are together, war has been averted, and football has commenced. Only sheer willpower led me to finish it.įirst off, this is the first book in a series, but when you start reading, all this stuff has already happened. You know I try to remain objective about critiquing someone's life work, but this book gave me a headache and if I'd had it in hardcopy, it would've been flung across the room a number of times. Action, intrigue, conflict, and tons of romance sets this series above others I've read. ![]() Their story has heart and warmth and I genuinely care for them and whatever plights befall them. What made me love this series so much is the incredible amount of chemistry, feeling, romance and love shared between this couple. Her future mate, Mason, is the epitome of what every male alpha should be with his undeniable power, protective instinct and care. This novel contains the first three novellas in the series (Without Mercy, Cherished and Blood Oath) which is wonderful since new readers don't have to wait for the next title to be published-they're all contained in one volume.ĭarcy is my favorite kind of heroine: strong yet vulnerable, mature, headstrong, faithful and loving. Now my bloodsuckers have to share the throne for the top spot on my list. I never considered myself much of a werewolf fan since vampires were my favorite paranormal characters-until I discovered Belinda Borings' Mystic Wolves series. The only thing that was nice was the Alpha's second and only because he was funny. Maybe the ending makes it better? Maybe they work as short stories and shouldn't have been put together? I was finally just tired of it. I was essentially just going through the motions reading it. ![]() It was completely boring and did not keep my attention at all. Then the rest of what I read was just emotional turmoil and everyone feeling guilty over it. The way that death was played out made absolutely no sense and was more like it was thrown in out of thin air that didn't fit what was happening around it just to cause problems. It just went from one random thing to the next, albeit it was all centered around the death, but that's the biggest problem for me. Randomly inserted death right at the beginning - what the? Werewolves being super protective of his mate -no problem, extremely normal. Werewolves playing football - no problem, normal. I read 110 pages and it made absolutely no sense. They're one of my favorite things to read, but this is a DNF for me.
